ENJOY THE JOYS OF WINTER IN A MAGICAL SETTING
The City of Shannon offers hours of fun at the Sports Chalet facilities and the Shannon outdoor rink. It is without a doubt the perfect place to enjoy time with family or simply take in the joys of winter in an enchanting setting. The 2.4 km* forest ice trail is illuminated in the evening and features an outdoor fire pit and a sliding hill. A perfect experience to recharge and enjoy the outdoors.
Admission is free for family members with proof of residence. A driver’s licence will be required at each visit.

Access to the rink must be paid on site by Canadian debit card or cash (Canadian currency only).
| American debit and credit cards, as well as cards in foreign currencies, are not accepted at the Sports Chalet. We therefore invite you to plan an alternative payment method. Several automated teller machines (ATMs) are located a few kilometres from our facilities, where you can withdraw Canadian currency.

Sports chalet – OPEN
With its large panoramic windows facing the ice trails in the forest and the hockey rinks, the Sports Chalet allows visitors to come and warm up, put on their skates and access the bathrooms in a warm atmosphere.

Equipment loan – OPEN
The City offers a free equipment loan service depending on availability.
- Skates of different sizes
- Bobby skating aids for children to help with stability and skating supports for adults (a piece of ID is now required as a deposit to borrow the bobbys and skating supports)

Hockey – OPEN
What could be better than a game of hockey with friends. The site offers two ice rinks specially equipped and illuminated in the evening.

Slide tower – CLOSED
Young and old alike will have fun going down the slide, accessible day and night.
Sliding mats are available on site.

Snowshoe trails – OPEN
Come experience an invigorating winter walk on our snowshoe trails in the forest.
The trails are accessible without reservation and free of charge for all.

Cross-country skiing – PARTIALLY OPENED
The cross-country ski trails are closed for the season starting Monday, March 17, 2025.
We hope you enjoyed our facilities and look forward to seeing you again next season!
Outdoor enthusiasts, put on your skis and come enjoy our marked trails in the heart of the forest.
- Track 1: 2.5 km – OPEN
- Track 2: 3.7 km – CLOSED
- Track 3: 5.3 km – OPEN
Access to the cross-country ski trail being free, no reservation is required to access the site.
No rental service is offered.
We thank users for staying on the trails and picking up their trash.

GENERAL RULES AND INFORMATION FOR USERS
The rink is maintained daily based on ice conditions and weather conditions.
The municipality reserves the right to close the rink and cross-country ski trails at any time, without notice.
The consumption of alcohol or drugs, as well as smoking, is strictly prohibited on the rink, on the ski trails, and inside the Sports Chalet.
Adults are encouraged to remind youth to respect the rules so that everyone can enjoy skating and pick-up hockey safely.
Any failure to comply with safety rules or general regulations may result in individual or group exclusion, without notice.
It is strictly prohibited, on all surfaces:
- Skating while carrying someone on your back or in your arms.
- Roughhousing, pushing, or skating in a manner that may cause other users to fall.
- Throwing objects onto the rink.
- Gathering or loitering along the edge of the rink.
- Throwing snow onto the rink.
- Being on the ice without skates, except:
- To access the sliding hill;
- For adults directly accompanying a child learning to skate, while wearing boots. A maximum of two accompanying adults per child is permitted. Accompanying adults must pay the access fee, even if they are not skating. Before entering the ice, boots must be cleaned at the boot washer and ice cleats must be worn (2025–2026 pilot project).
RULES – SMALL RINK
- Reserved for children aged 12 and under and their parents.
PICK-UP HOCKEY RULES (SMALL AND LARGE RINKS)
- All players must wear a CSA-approved helmet, a full face protector, and a neck guard.
- Respect between players is essential.
- Pick-up hockey is a participatory, non-competitive activity.
On hockey rinks, it is strictly prohibited:
- Taking slap shots.
- Sitting on the top of the boards.
- Entering the ice with a sled or stroller.
- Entering the ice with a “bobby” or an adult skating aid.
RULES – FREE SKATING (ON THE TRAIL)
- Wearing a protective helmet is strongly recommended for children aged 10 and under, as well as for beginner skaters of any age.
- Only beginner children may use “bobbys”.
- Beginner teenagers and adults must use adult skating aids.
On the trail, it is strictly prohibited:
- Practicing figure skating moves.
- Using a hockey stick or puck.
- Linking arms, playing tag, or throwing snowballs.
- Racing or stopping abruptly.
- Sitting or playing along the edges in a way that causes snow buildup on the ice.
Conditions for accessing the trail with a stroller or sled:
- Strollers and sleds are permitted only on the skating trail; access to hockey rinks is not allowed.
- Users must move in a way that does not obstruct others.
- Wheels or runners must be clean and free of dirt or calcium before entering the ice.
SLIDING HILL RULES
- It is recommended to bring your own sled.
- “Crazy carpets” or sleds may be available for free use under the sliding hill staircase, depending on availability; however, there may be none available.
- Adults must supervise children at all times.
- Slide only in a seated position.
- Wait until the slide is clear before going down.
On the sliding hill, it is strictly prohibited:
- Sliding while standing, lying down, or kneeling.
- Using skis, a snowboard, or skates.
- Using a three-runner sled or a rigid sled.
- Walking back up within the sliding area.
CROSS-COUNTRY SKIING AND SNOWSHOEING
It is recommended to notify staff at the Sports Chalet before your departure.
There are no shelters or heated rest areas on the trails. Skiers and walkers are encouraged to plan their outing accordingly.
Cross-country ski trails are groomed as frequently as possible, depending on weather conditions.
RULES – CROSS-COUNTRY SKIING AND SNOWSHOEING
- Follow posted signage and remain on marked trails.
- The cross-country ski trails cross private properties owned by Shannon residents. Respect for these areas is essential. Please keep noise to a minimum and help preserve the peacefulness of the surroundings.
- For your safety, do not wear headphones or any device that may impair your hearing.
- Yield or request passage by saying “Track.”
- Before descending, wait until the previous skier has reached the bottom.
- Keep to the right on the trails.
- In case of emergency, dial 911 and wait for assistance.
- Clear the trail promptly if you stop or fall.
- After a fall, fill in any holes left in the snow.
- Report any irregularities on the trails to the municipality at (418) 844-3778 or at loisirs@shannon.ca
- Return to the Sports Chalet before closing time.

Water games – CLOSED
Water games are open for the summer season.
The facilities, located at 73, Gosford Road, are in operation from 8 a.m. to 9 p.m., every day, until September.

Volleyball court – CLOSED

Our volleyball court is available to citizens. It can be reserved for one or more friendly games or for a league.
Reservations are free of charge, but a security deposit of $100 must be provided when the contract is signed. This deposit will be kept for the duration of the agreement. If there is no damage to the court, the deposit will be returned in full at the end of the reservation. Otherwise, this amount may be used to cover the costs of any damage.
A reservation is not necessary to use the court; however, a user with a reservation contract will have priority over users without a contract who wish to use the court at the same time.

Hockey rinks – CLOSED

The hockey rinks will remain available to the public during the summer. This way, you can practise your favourite sport even when there is no ice! The nets will remain on the rinks but users must provide their own sticks and balls.
These rinks can be reserved for a friendly game or for a league.
A security deposit of $200 is required in cash upon reservation. This deposit will be kept for the duration of the agreement. If there is no damage to the field, the deposit will be returned in full at the end of the reservation. Otherwise, this amount may be used to cover the costs of any damage.
A reservation is not necessary to use the court; however, a user with a reservation contract will have priority over users without a contract who wish to use the court at the same time.
Due to COVID-19, we invite users to respect the distancing instructions as well as the other public health instructions in force.
Pétanque fields – CLOSED

So, do you shoot or point? Some petanque courts are at your disposal to have fun.
Users must provide their own equipment.
Please note :
- Dogs are prohibited on the site.
- The Tobacco control act prohibits smoking on sports fields and playgrounds.
