Ce mercredi 17 mai marque la Journée internationale contre l’homophobie et la transphobie. Afin de démontrer son appui, la Ville de Shannon a hissé le drapeau arc-en-ciel devant l’Hôtel de Ville.
« La Ville de Shannon, qui se veut inclusive et ouverte à la diversité sexuelle et de genre, est fière de donner son appui à la Fondation Émergence et à la communauté LGBTQ+ », a indiqué la mairesse Sarah Perreault.
D’où vient la journée ?
La journée est originaire du Québec. La Fondation Émergence crée en 2003 la première journée nationale contre l’homophobie. Depuis la Fondation Émergence organise une campagne de sensibilisation chaque année. D’autres organismes ont repris cette journée et elle est maintenant célébrée dans de nombreux pays.
Pourquoi le 17 mai ?
Le 17 mai est une date symbolique pour les personnes homosexuelles. L’homosexualité est retirée de la liste des maladies mentales de l’Organisation mondiale de la santé (OMS) le 17 mai 1990.

THE CITY OF SHANNON MARKS INTERNATIONAL DAY AGAINST HOMOPHOBIA AND TRANSPHOBIA
This Wednesday, May 17 marks the International Day Against Homophobia and Transphobia. To show its support, the City of Shannon hoisted the rainbow flag in front of City Hall.
“The City of Shannon, who wants to be inclusive and open to sexual and gender diversity, is proud to support Fondation Émergence and the LGBTQ+ community,” said Mayoress Sarah Perreault.
Where does the day come from?
The day originated in Quebec. In 2003, Fondation Émergence created the first national day against homophobia. Since then, Fondation Émergence has organized an awareness campaign every year. Other organizations have taken over this day and it is now celebrated in many countries.
Why May 17?
May 17 is a symbolic date for homosexual people. Homosexuality was removed from the list of mental illnesses of the World Health Organization (WHO) on May 17, 1990.
