La Ville de Shannon souhaite informer la population que suite à la récente annonce du ministère des Transports concernant la fermeture préventive de l’ancien pont Gosford, qui enjambe la rivière Jacques-Cartier, la circulation sur, en dessous et au pourtour du pont (à pied, à motoneige, en raquettes ou autre) est strictement interdite puisque la structure du pont présente d’importants risques pour la sécurité.
Le ministère des Transports, le Service de la sécurité publique et le Service des travaux publics de la Ville surveillent attentivement l’évolution de la situation. Le ministère des transports effectuera des travaux d’urgence dans le secteur au cours des prochains jours et des prochaines semaines.
Afin de faciliter leur travail, nous demandons à la population d’éviter le secteur jusqu’à nouvel ordre.
En raison de l’actuelle situation, la vitesse sur le nouveau pont Gosford est dorénavant réduite et passe donc de 50 km/heure à 40 km/heure. Rappelons que la circulation piétonne y est également interdite jusqu’à nouvel ordre. Nous remercions les automobilistes de respecter la nouvelle signalisation en cours.

Rappelons que l’ancien pont de Shannon a été inauguré le 1er décembre 1880 dans le but d’enjamber la rivière Jacques-Cartier sur la ligne de chemin de fer Québec-Gosford. En 1920, une voie pour les automobiles y est aménagée. En 1929, le Canadien National cède le pont à la municipalité. Il ne sera donc plus utilisé pour aucun type de train. La valeur patrimoniale accordée à cet ouvrage de génie civil repose principalement sur son intérêt historique, son authenticité, son architecture et sa valeur de position. Il constitue un des derniers spécimens de structure en acier de type Phoenix au Québec. Le ministère des Transports considère ce pont comme ayant une grande valeur patrimoniale.

Complete closure of the old Gosford Bridge in Shannon
The City of Shannon wishes to inform the population that following the recent announcement from the ministère des Transports concerning the preventive closure of the old Gosford bridge, which spans the Jacques-Cartier river, traffic on, below and around the bridge (pedestrian, snowmobile, snowshoe or other) is strictly prohibited since the structure of the bridge presents significant safety risks.
